We Are The Body

Back in 2010 I was riding my bicycle after dark, when I made an unexpected and violent exit from my normal, day-to-day routine. An enraged dog charged out of nowhere and became entangled with the smoothly whirring operation of my 10-speed, which, in turn, caused me to proceed over the handle bars and land with a sickly thud on the road. The result was a broken collar bone and weeks in a sling.

I have suffered a few injuries like this over the span of my years on planet earth, and in my experience it takes a minute or two for the full extent of the injury to become apparent, but then once it sets in the whole body sympathizes with the part that hurts. Fingers gingerly explore the injury. The feet adjust their pace. The face grimaces. This reminds me of Ephesians 5:29-30, “For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body”

In this message, as we welcome five new people into membership at State Road, we’ll be study that portion of scripture in 1 Corinthians 12 that famously describes the church as a body made up of various and diverse parts. I’m excited to see what God will have to say to us as we worship Him through the study of these verses.
