Robes of Righteousness

We conclude our current sermon series focusing on those passages that highlight pieces of clothing by studying Isaiah 61 together. One the occasion when Jesus returned to His hometown of Nazareth, Jesus stood up in the synagogue and read a portion of this chapter (Luke 4:16-21), and after reading it He said, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” So, Jesus’ own testimony about Isaiah 61 is that it is about Himself. Isaiah 61 is remarkable for all the generous, positive and happy descriptors it contains about the effect of Jesus in coming into the world, and we’re going to spend some time this Sunday thinking about the joyous things that await us (and are even now beginning to be realized) because we have been clothed in robes of righteousness. That’s how Isaiah 61 describes what Jesus did for all those who have put their trust in Him for salvation. In verses 10 and 11 we read, “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with robes of righteousness.”
